I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday with your loved ones and that you survived the 2k10BLIZZZZZZZZZARD!

Here's to 2011! Cheers!

What are your plans for NYE? I'll be with the boyfriend, maybe go out for a drink with him before champaign time and a nice night in.

Whatever you decide to do...be safe and if you're drinking, don't drive.

The End of the Fall 2010 Semester

So here's how it's gone.

American Sign Language 1 - Hoping for the A. My final was part written and then two PPT presentations where I was signing in front of the class.

I must say I loved this class. It was interactive and I had some great people in my class and an amazing teacher in Carole Lazorisak. She is such an encouraging and engaging teacher, the only way to do bad is to just not try. There was one person in the class who did nothing at all and still came, but it may be that she was just really high all the time and didn't know work was supposed to be done.

Business Law - Pretty much just waiting for the A to be put on the transcript. The final is on the 20th, but it's just about a done deal. All I need is a 85 or better and I have the A.

This class was fun, but a little frustrating. I was the only one reading the chapters before class and the only one participating until the last month where the teacher asked me not to participate. Never had that request before, but I honored it because she wanted the other students to try. Of the two tests we had in the class, the lowest grade I got was 100. Seems like it's a slam dunk, so I'm hoping for the 4.0 this term.

Next semester, I have Principles of Management and American Sign Language 2. Carole said ASL 2 is easier than ASL 1, so it should be a good class. I trust her, so if she says it is easy, I believe it. She told me to keep participating and practicing and having a good time with the language and I'll become fluent in it. I need to start meeting Deaf friends to really feel comfortable with it. I'm hoping for the best.

I'll post my grades when I actually get them, but I am fully expecting the 4.0 this term and that will bring my GPA to a 3.925. Still can't get the 4.0 at graduation without honors courses, but they're all scheduled for when I'm working! UGH!

I'm still here!

Sorry, I've been ignoring this blog for a bit because of studying and other committments, but I'm still around.

I'm flowing through my two classes pretty well this semester. Busines Law is fun. I'm enjoying the class and the discussions about the applications of law and contract law in particular. The teacher is very good if you participate, but unfortunately, I'm pretty much the only person participating and reading the chapters.

ASL is the really fun class. I was scared at the start of this class, but I'm understanding it and can communicate with the teacher, who is Deaf. The downside is that only me and one other person is really getting it, the rest are floundering, including my friend Shelley, who has been having a rough go of it.

Finals are in two weeks. Amazing how fast this semester went!

The Slow Start

This semester is not starting off on the right foot.

My Business Law class is going decently, but it is dreadfully boring. My ASL class has met ONCE and will not meet again until Sept 28th. How the hell am I supposed to learn anything at all when I don't have class? These books are also costing me over $250 for the ASL class alone!

I got my BTM110 text already, but ordered the ASL ones online and hope they get here soon because I need to practice. Knowing LaGCC, you will be responsible for learning things on your own for a class that has yet to meet a second time. I am not going to let that stop me from getting the A in the class. It is just extremely frustrating.

A Week Away

Next week is the start of classes at LaGCC. Starting Monday, I will be having classes 4 days a week...Mon-Thurs, 6pm-7:30pm. Of course, I'm back in the C Building all day, but that's all good, I like that building.

I'm wondering how the counseling internship will go. I have already started with a few students and will be working more on this next week. I have a few advisements to take care of and start the mentorship of about 10 first year students for the fall.

I hope all goes well.

BTW, I have ASL 1 and Business Law for this term.

New Semester Coming...

Sorry that I haven't been around much, lots of work and it has been a very hard summer. Be that as it may, I have registered for my two classes this semester and will be in training as a student counselor. In the Spring 2011 session, I'll be TEACHING!!!!!!

That's right! Yours truly will be teaching the New Student Seminar for incoming freshmen! How amazing is that??

So my classes this term are Business Law and American Sign Language 1. It should be a fun term.

I'll be better at updating...I promise!!

Can't Get a Break

Finals are this week. My research paper is due this week. Lots of work to do at work this week. What happens? I throw out my back after falling down the stairs at the train station.

I get no breaks. Can't really sit or lay down, hurts to stand, so no matter what I do, I'm hurting.

This sucks.

Semester is Almost Over

This first semester is almost over and I have survived. My English class is going well, I have an A- average so far and I won't settle for anything less than a B+ in the class. My Intro to Business class is going well and the professor is very good. I've gotten great feedback and I want to speak with him to advise me on my language classes.

Finals are next month.

I will be foregoing summer classes because I just plain can't afford it right now. Having money trouble from credit card debts and am paying that off at the same time I am paying off school. Not a good idea, but I don't have to worry about it later.

The Fall will be better.

I can feel it now...

The stress, the work, the lack of sleep. I am a college student now.

I did my first essay for English class about The Story of An Hour. I think it was good, but let;s wait for the verdict.

I'm enjoying my business class. Did my first homework assignment for that class and analyzed ethics in business. Was an interesting assignment. I'm starting to really enjoy this.

Week 1

So I've made it through my first week of classes and have to say I enjoyed them. My English 102 teacher, Professor Wiggins, is a little off pudding it seems, but nice enough, and passionate aboutthe subject matter, which is something I'm thankful for. If the teacher isn't passionate about her class, it's not worth the time. She provided all of the reading materials and all the stories selected are stories I've read in the past and have enjoyed, so this is good.

My BTM 101 - Intro to Business teacher is Geordan Hull. He is very engaging and friendly and I have a feeling, very stern, which I like. He's one who posts the entire lesson on his website, so we can access it at any time. He''s also quite handsome, but his teaching method has been the thing drawing my eyes towards him. He has made the 3 hour class entertaining and genuinely wants his students to succeed.

This will be a good quarter!

Tomorrow is the day

I'm scared and excited at the same time. Got the Freshman Seminar and English tomorrow. Happy birthday to me.

Tomorrow is the day!

I start class tomorrow! It will also be my birthday! I will officially be that 30 year old freshman!

Monday, February 8, 2010

Classes are set

I've registered for my first quarter. It was an ordeal.

I had a jerk of an advisor, they had my major wrong and so many people were rude, but I must say, there were a lot of people who were trying to be nice, but I was in a foul mood over the whole advisor thing.

Either way, I'm set to take two classes and forced into taking a New Student Seminar because I need it to graduate.

My first day of class is my birthday, exactly 29 days away from now. I will officially be a 30 year old freshman on the first day of class.

Crisis Averted

OK, so I was able to bring all of the documents, but this is still a long drawn out affair. I cannot register until the Registrar's office sets up an appointment for me via SNAIL MAIL! Seriously...why couldn't I just go up to the Admissions office and just make my appointment right then and there??

The Health Center wasn't easy to find, but once I got there, they were the coolest people ever. I was snipping about having to fill out new forms for something I did already and they said "Listen, if you fill it out now, I can enter it in while you wait instead of having to wait." Done and done!

I want to register for two courses...Spanish and Statistics. I'm going for a "Courses that start with S" theme...This will give me time to go to the Fitness Center and start working out. I need to get myself into shape and why not use the free GYM???

Immunization Records Fiasco

So here's the problem.

I got a notice with my Business Program acceptance that I must provide immunization records for a number of shots. I was told these needed to be submitted by January 18th. Original records AND copies must be provided.

On Monday, Jan 11th, I was able to get in touch with my former pediatrician, which took forever to find him, and have my records faxed to my job so I could take them to the school. Because of the stipulation that original records be provided, I wanted to call the school and explain my circumstances rather than go to the office and be told to go home because I don't have the correct records.

I called the admissions office at La Guardia CC and got an IVR system (ugh) and I ended up on a voice mail system after trying at least 5 times to get to a person. The outgoing message stated that someone from the office will get back to me before the day is out (7pm) and to leave a message. I leave my message with my name, phone number, and my question and I wait all day for a call back. No calls from the school.

I try calling the school on Tuesday and have the same thing happen. No calls from the school on Tuesday.

I try calling the school on Wednesday and have the same thing happen. No calls from the school on Wednesday.

I try calling the school on Thursday and have the same thing happen. Out of sheer luck, I get a call from the school on Thursday night at 6:59pm, right before their office closes, with the admissions office inviting me to a new student event. This event is during work hours, so I could not go to it, but I got to ask my question about my medical records and got my answer that yes, the faxed documents are acceptable.

Here is the problem. I was told via the letter that the records needed to be filed by the 18th, which is MLK Day and the CUNY offices are closed. The offices are closed Friday, saturday & Sunday on a regular week, and are closed on the 18th when I need to have these filed by.

Seriously, WTF.

I am going to call them on Monday just to see if the office is open because the IVR does make that distinction. If it is open, I will be stopping by there after work and before bowling to drop off my paperwork and set my appointment to register.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

I'm excited. I just got my vaccination records for CUNY so I can go down there tomorrow or Thursday to the offices and give my records in and start registering for classes!

A surprise...

La Guardia CC sent me a letter stating I was accepted into the Business Program!

Their Admission staff told me there was almost no way I'd get into it, but apparently I'm in!
